Borneo - Semporna and Sibuan Island 11.09.2011
Semporna is a small town located in the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia on the island of Borneo. A very smelly third-world town, most people only base themselves here for a short time while they go diving/snorkelling at the many amazing tropical islands nearby. The main reason I came here was for a special island named Sipadan a world class diving paradise.
To get to Semporna I flew from KL to Tawau (3 hour trip) followed by a one and a half hour long bus ride to Semporna. My first thoughts were what the hell am I doing here as I entered but the friendly people I met during my stay and spectacular diving made it all worthwhile.
I stayed at the Sipadan Inn, accommodation specifically built for divers right next to the harbour for 5 nights. On the first night I arrived I had a pre-booked Proboscis Monkey river cruise which was OK it might have been a lot better if there was more people and not just myself on the tour! Unfortunately I only got to see proboscis monkeys from about 100+ metres away in the dense jungle mangroves so I didn’t get any photos of them.
The next 4 days were spent scuba diving at Sipadan and Sibuan Island. Sibuan Island was like a post card everything you would expect from a tropical island very picturesque. I spent one day scuba diving here although it was very good for small tropical fish there weren’t many large fish around as the 30-40 sea gypsies who live on the island had fished it to death so I spent most of the day getting through my Advanced Open Water course objectives.
