Australia - Mt Weld (Laverton), Super Pit (Kalgoorlie) 21.09.10
My first work trip up to Mt Weld in Laverton a two hour flight north east of Perth in the WA Goldfields.
Sent up to sort out Lynas's Laverton office's IT system and have a look at the Mt Weld mine site where I will be working.
My flight up to Leonora was an experience in itself travelling in a 19 seater plane with a handful of other miners.
I was picked up in Leonora by a fellow workmate who stopped off at a couple of old gold mine sites along the way to Laverton.
The next day I was taken to Mt Weld and had a good look around the concentration plant which was still being constructed.
In the afternoon a workmate and I drove 4 hours down to Kalgoorlie and took a look at the famouse SUPER PIT which blew my mind with its colossal size. A few interesting facts about the super pit:
* Approximately 3.5 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and 360 metres deep. At these dimensions, it is large enough to be seen from space!
* The mine produces 850,000 ounces (28 tonnes) per year of gold
* Around 15 million tonnes of rock is moved in any given year
We stayed in Kalgoorlie and flew back to Perth the next morning. A great start to Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) work.
